Title 1 : Deficiency in energy conversion in brain may cause bipolar disorder (Date: 4/1/2004) Archives of General Psychiatry의 3월호에 bipolar disorder (BD: 양극성장애, 조울증)과 mitochondria의 관계에 대해 발표되어졌다. mitochondria는 세포의 기능을 유지하기 위해 글루코즈와 같은 당을 대사하여 세포의 구조를 유지하는 기능을 갖는다. Christine Konradi와 그의 연구진은 양극성장애를 가진 환자의 brain mitochondria gene level을 정상집단과 정신분열증을 가진 환자집단과 각각 비교하였다. 이 연구진은 BD환자집단이 나머지 대조군집단(정산과 정신분열증환자집단)에 비해 mitochondria의 hippocampal region에서의 당 대사 효율이 현저하게 감소한다는 것을 발견하였다. 또한, BD환자의 frontal cortex에서도 비슷한 양상이 나타난다는 것을 발견하였다. Konradi는 이러한 결과에 대하여 보고서에서 다음과 같이 설명하였다: 이러한 gene level의 감소는 세포에 존재하는 'power plants'(mitochondria)가 충분하지 않거나, power plants가 기능을 잃었다는 것을 말한다. 우리 연구진은 BD환자와 energy transfer감소 사이의 관계에 대해 제안하고자 한다. 그녀와 연구진은 이러한 연구가 BD환자의 치료를 위한 새로운 약물 발굴에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있으리라 기대하고 있다.
